FDTD: Finite-Difference Time-Domain

FDTD stands for Finite-Difference Time-Domain, which is a computational technique used for modeling and solving complex electromagnetic problems. It is widely used in engineering and physics to simulate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in various materials and environments.

Key Concepts of FDTD

• Discretization: The continuous spatial domain is discretized into a grid or mesh. Similarly, the time domain is discretized into small time steps. This converts the continuous Maxwell's equations into a set of finite-difference equations.
• Maxwell's Equations: FDTD directly solves Maxwell's curl equations, which describe how electric and magnetic fields propagate and interact. The time-stepping nature of FDTD allows it to capture the dynamic behavior of electromagnetic fields.
• Yee Grid: Named after Kane Yee, who introduced the method in 1966, the Yee grid is a specific arrangement of electric and magnetic field components on a staggered grid. This helps in maintaining the central difference approximations and accurately capturing the interactions between the fields.
• Time Stepping: The simulation advances in small discrete time steps. At each time step, the electric fields are updated based on the magnetic fields from the previous time step, and vice versa.
• Boundary Conditions: Proper boundary conditions are crucial for FDTD simulations. Common types include:
  • Perfectly Matched Layer (PML): Absorbs outgoing waves to prevent reflections from the boundaries.
  • Periodic Boundary Conditions (PBC): Useful for simulating infinite or repeating structures.
  • Conducting Boundaries: Represent perfect electrical conductors.
